WHAT TO DO IN BELIZE
Snorkeling
Belize is world renowned for its pristine turquoise waters which makes it ideal for people who love to enjoy the water and wildlife that inhabit our area. Snorkeling is a popular choice because of our close by reserves and marine sanctuaries. If you really like adventure and fun, the most popular trip by far is Hol Chan/Shark Ray Alley. Hol Chan Marine Preserve is our underwater park that is one of the wonders of Belize. It is truly packed with undersea creatures and outstanding coral. Shark Ray Alley is full of nurse sharks, spotted eagle rays, sting rays and moray eel which your guides will hold and feed for you. This definitely is the trip where you want to bring your underwater camera! Or you can head north and go to Mexico Rocks and Tres Cocos for another unbelievable snorkeling adventure. We can also arrange for day trips to Caye Caulker - our island next door. There are half and whole day trips available.
Diving
Ever since Jacques Cousteau came on his Calypso to the Blue Hole, Belize has been a destination for people who love to dive. We have hundreds of tiny islands and atolls, plus the second longest barrier reef in the world. You can dive Hol Chan and Shark Ray Alley and see an array of underwater sea life! There are literally hundreds of dive sites throughout Belize making each dive a new adventure. The Blue Hole trip is considered the ultimate dive experience. People talk about this dive for the rest of their lives. It's an accomplishment to dive the Blue Hole. You can also go to Turneffe where the pristine waters really show off the magnificent colors of the coral and an abundance of tropical fish life including spotted eagle rays, sea turtles, and moray eels. I even saw a sea horse when I was there. They are the cutest little creatures in the sea. We offer a variety of dive packages including half, whole day and overnight trips. PADI certifications available.
Manatee/Snorkel Trip
Everybody raves after seeing the Manatees (sea cow). They are the most gorgeous, docile creatures in the water. Come and see how beautiful these endangered animals are in their own habitat. The Manatee trip also includes a stop at Goff's Caye - where the reef reaches the shore so you can kick off your flip flops and literally walk right out into the water and snorkel. There is a palapa for shade and lunchtime BBQs. The island is so tiny you can literally walk around it in five minutes. You gaze out across the sea and can see the Maya Mountains on the horizon. It's paradise!
Fishing
With numerous types of fishing available, Belize is a fisherman's paradise. You can light tackle fly fish, spin reel fish, deep sea fish and reef fish. People come for the bone fish, tarpon, permit, snapper, barracuda, sharks, jacks, grouper and more. You can fish in the flats or the mangroves. You can use live bait and go trolling. I've caught some lovely tuna and had sushi right on the boat. It's always amazing seeing how well the fishermen can cast their nets for the sardines. I have a friend who was casting by the time he was 4 years old. Fresh fish dinners! Let us know your pleasure and we can arrange your trip. What a fabulous way to experience the true spectacular nature of Belize.
Jungle Tours
A wonderful way to get away from the island for the day is to take a jungle tour. A very popular trip is the Altun Ha Mayan Ruin and Jungle Wildlife Adventure. Altun Ha is the most extensively excavated Mayan ruin in Belize that was a major ceremonial center during the Classic Period, as well as a vital trade center that linked the Caribbean shores with the other Mayan centers it the interior. Many trips make a lunch stop at Maruba Jungle Resort where you can dine poolside, enjoy a massage or take a ride through the jungle on horseback.
The Cave Tubing Trip to Jaguar Paw Resort and the Belize Zoo is truly awesome. It's a nice change in the fresh water with spelunking lights on your head as you float through crystal caves and beautiful cathedrals. We had a man and a German Shepard as our guide. It's about an hour long hike through the jungle and you have to carry your own tube. When your body hits the cool water and you start floating through paradise, the hour long hike fades from your memory and you can relax and glide down the river. Have a great lunch at Jaguar Paw Resort and head out to the Belize Zoo.
The Jungle Repelling is great. Jungle Repelling is where you are whisked through the canopy of the jungle by a series of platforms until you reach the bottom. Jungle repelling is relatively new to Belize and a great adventure for adrenaline junkies.
Lamanai Mayan Ruin and River Tour
Journey back to the time of the Mayan Empire when you explore the Lamanai Mayan Center on the Belize New River. The expansive site holds over 800 structures deep in the tropical forest. Lamanai (submerged crocodile) was occupied as early as 1500 bc. The river trip takes you past remote villages and offers the opportunity to see lots of exotic birds and other wildlife in their native habitat. Lamanai holds precious artifacts spanning well over 2000 years of Mayan history.
Tikal, Guatemala
The award for the most awesome Central American ruin goes to Tikal. This truly massive Mayan ruin really exemplifies how vast and complex the ancient civilization was. Tucked deep in the Guatemalen jungle, Tikal is magical with exotic birds, howler and spider monkeys and archaeological wonders. It's one of the most spiritual journeys in Central America. You can fly from San Pedro to Belize City and then off to Flores and back in one day. But I highly recommend staying the night in Flores, Guatemala if you have time. The quaint town has gondolas that can take you around Lake Peten. Many people love to explore the ruins of Tikal under the full moon. Looking around you see millions of tiny eyes twinkling in the darkness of the jungle at night. When you wake up at 5, you'll hear the jungle raving.
Parasailing
I recently had the fantastic opportunity to go on the first parasail ride of the morning. What a high! All nerves melted away when I was flying in the sky like a bird, attached to the boat by a rope. The views are stunning. You can see the reef and the deep sea and over the island to the lagoon. You will be taken to the extreme south of the island and back. From high in the sky you see the Mexican border.
Kayaking
There is always an adventure when you set off to the reef or paddle across the lagoon in a one or two person kayak. It's possible to go from the front of the island through the river to the back on kayak. Always take a 2222222222hat, sunscreen and plenty of water. Rent by the hour or or whole day.
Sailsports
Windsurfing, sailing and kitesurfing are some of the activities gaining popularity on Ambergris Caye. Whether you are just a beginner in need of a few lessons or are out to try out outstanding conditions, we can arrange for an exciting day of fun on the water. We arrange board rentals, Hobie Wave, and Laser Pico. Daily/weekly rentals available. Boards and sails for all abilities. All lessons with certified RYA/PASA instructors.
Lobster Fest, Caye Caulker
Lobster Fest, Caye Caulker
Lobster Fest is a three day extravaganza of fun, food and music in early July on Caye Caulker. Enjoy different varieties of lobster and many other tasty treats while wandering the stalls listening to lively music. Great fun!
Costa Maya Festival, San Pedro
The Costa Maya Festival is a celebration of the Mayan culture and the only festival of its kind in Central America. It is also the largest festival in Belize and the highlight of Ambergris Caye's entertainment year. The Reina de la Costa Maya Pageant is a stunning competition including some of the most beautiful women in Central America. The celebration includes parades, beauty pageant, delicious food, carnival rides, muscle men and more.
